Alexander Stein wurde als jüngster Sohn von sechs Geschwistern in Koblenz geboren. 1990 kam er nach Berlin zog im Sommer der Währungsunion in das sogenannte demokratische Berlin Hauptstadt der noch existenten DDR und lebte lange im besetzten Kreativhaus in der Dunckerstrasse 14 /15. Dort entstand sein erster Animationsfilm ´Revolting Appetite´ (Ausschnitt), nachdem er bei der Kaskeline Filmakademie Animation erlernte. Er studierte desweiteren Film, Theater, Ethonolgie und Publizistik an der FU und der der HU Berlin.

Zu interfilm kam er 1998. Man traf sich damals bei Festivalleiter Heinz privat in der Oranienstrasse im kleinen Büro mit zwei Rechnern am Modem. Telefon gab es auch. Im Jahr 2000 dann GmbH-Gründung und Einweihung des Büros am Tempelhofer Ufer. Alex koordinierte fortan die Festivals als Produzent und wurde 2003 neben Heinz Geschäftsführer.

Seitdem ist er die zentrale Schnittstelle zwischen Festivalplanung und -realisierung. Alex nahm 1998 liebst Monica aus Australien zur Frau, mit der er schon viele glückliche Nachtschichten in den legendären Bars Torpedokäfer (Dunckerstr.) und Luxus (Belforterstr) erlebt hatte. Monica ist seit langem treue Übersetzerin von interfilm-Texten. Und sweet Jasper ist nun auch schon fünf Jahre alt.

Alexander Stein was born in Koblenz as the youngest of six siblings. He moved to Berlin in 1990, during the summer of the German-German monetary union, to the so-called „democratic capital“ of the then still existent German Democratic Republic. He spent many years living in the creative „Dunckerland“ squat at Duncker Strasse 14/15, which was also where he made his first animation film, ‚Revolting Appetite‚ (excerpt) after studying animation at Kaskeline Filmakademie . Furthermore, Alex studied film, theatre, ethnology and journalism at the FU and HU Universities in Berlin.

He joined interfilm in 1998. In those days the festival was run from Heinz’s humble home office in Oranien Strasse, with two computers attached to a modem. They even had a telephone. In 2000 Alex co-founded the limited company interfilm and celebrated the inauguration of the office space at Tempelhofer Ufer. From then on, Alex took on the role of producer in festival coordination and alongside Heinz, became managing director of interfilm in 2003.

Since then he’s become the busy link between festival planning and realisation. Alex took sweet, (swearing), Australian Monica as his wife in 1998, with whom he’d shared hundreds of euphoric nightshifts in the legendary Prenzlauer Berg bars, Torpedokäfer and Luxus. Monica has been a faithful translator of interfilm texts for many years. And dashing young Jasper is already five years old.
