Während der wilden Westberliner Hausbesetzerzeiten gründete Heinz Hermanns mit Kollegen im Jahr 1981 das Kino Eiszeit in Kreuzberg. Ein Jahr später organisierte er mit jungen Filmemachern das erste internationale Super 8 Filmfestival “interfilm 1”. Das Festival griff die aktuellen politischen Umbrüche auf und zeigte unter anderem Filme, die von Hausbesetzern im Häuserkampf und bei Demonstrationen gedreht worden waren. – Heinz Hermanns, geboren in Duisburg, war zuvor Sozialarbeiter in Belfast, und studierte Politik in Berlin und in Urbino, Italien.

Das Kurzfilmfestival trieb er in leidenschaftlicher Kraft voran, einige Male wußte es jedoch wegen mangelnder Förderung ausfallen. 1998 zog das Festival nach Berlin Mitte, mit Alexander Stein und Matthias Groll etablierte er ein festes Team, im Jahr 2000 wurde die interfilm-Agentur gegründet und seitdem das Festival-Volumen immens erweitert.

Heinz ist Mitgründer des Berliner U-Bahn-Festivals Going Underground sowie des Zebra Poetry Film Awards. Seit Jahren gibt er weltweit Seminare über Filmsprache für Jugendliche, Studenten und Erwachsene. Er tourt mit Kurzfilmprogrammen um die Welt – siehe ´around the world´, und ist in vielen internationalen Juries vertreten.

In 1981, during the wild days of the West Berlin squatter’s movement, Heinz Hermanns and several of his colleagues founded the Eiszeit cinema in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg, which Heinz ran for 9 years. One year later, in 1982, Heinz and a group of young filmmakers organised the first international Super-8 film festival „interfilm 1″, held in various Kreuzberg cinemas. Early festival editions addressed the political climate and upheavals of the time, with many of the films made by squatters and shot during squatting battles and demonstrations. – Heinz Hermanns was born in Duisburg, West Germany and had previously worked as a social worker in Belfast, Ireland and studied politics in Berlin and Urbino, Italy.

While Heinz continued to organise and direct the annual short film festival with passionate determination throughout the 1980’s and 90’s, it was cancelled on two occassions due to lack of funding. The festival was relocated to the more central Berlin-Mitte district in 1998, and Heinz joined forces with Alexander Stein and Matthias Groll to establish a steadfast and dynamic core team. The scale and scope of the interfilm festival underwent immense expansion and in 2000, interfilm founded their distribution agency.

In addition, Heinz is also co-founder of both Going Underground , the „super-short“ film festival held in Berlin subway trains, and the Zebra Poetry Film Award , a biennial festival of poetry-inspired short films. He has been giving seminars on film language for children, adolescents and students internationally for many years now, takes short film programs around the world, and has been festival juror at a multitude of festivals both at home and abroad.
